The second, smaller pool where the
hot springs rise,
which was regarded as sacred by the
Romans.
The room above is the Pump Rooms, built
in Georgian times for
visitors to drink the "curative" waters.
Today the Pump Rooms are an elegant
tea rooms and restaurant
with a string quartet and sedan chairs.
An ornate Georgian water fountain, surrounded
by capering cast iron dolphins,
gives visitors the chance to taste
a glass of the steaming, cloudy, rather sulphurous, water.
